|@ipsy bag: January 2017, a #review of Metropolis. #makeup #cosmetics
||[Feb. 8th, 2017|02:10 pm]
I love trying out new cosmetics products as much as the next person that likes make-up and skin care.
But Belgium isn’t particularly known for deluxe sample sizes (some stores sometimes give them out, but you’ve got to luck out). We also don’t have a Sephora program (despite Sephora being French) where we can use our points to get free deluxe samples. Heck, over here it’s pretty hard to get regular samples. A few companies give them out when you place an order on their site, and ICI PARIS XL gives them out in their store with purchase, if and when the person at the register is in a good mood. Basically I know only one IPXL shop girl that is super kind AND generous with samples, ‘nuff said.
So when I saw the December Ipsy unbagging video by Madison Miller, I was intrigued. I watched some more, from different months and different youtubers, and looked into Ipsy. And sorted out my account (with the help of some friends that live in the US, thanks guys!).
My plan is to set aside the stuff I don’t want/can’t use in little boxes for cosmetics loving friends and give them a nice little box of things on their birthday :). Alhough if it keeps going like this month’s bag, I’m not sure there’ll be a lot to give out, oops!
Anyway, enough waffling about why I have Ipsy (I promise this won’t happen again next with the post about next month’s bag!). Let’s get to the bag! I’ll leave some more info about Ipsy below the products, so people have a better idea how Ipsy made this particular choice for me etc.
First of all: the bag. Everyone is getting the same bag, and it will contain at least 5 deluxe samples or full size items (like if you get a brush it will be normal size of course). It’s a pencil case style make-up bag. I’m basically hamstering the lot I get in a box. Bert and I always joke that when we spawn, we’ll NEVER have to buy a pencil case for our kid and will just tell it to get one from the box of bags haha. Actually, it’s not a joke, we really will do that. I refuse to chuck them out, sooner or later they’ll come in handy.
These are the products I should have gotten (because the sheet masks were missing):
Model Co, Blush Cheek Powder in Peach Bellini
Naked Cosmetics, Mica pigment in Desert Sunset #02
Rimmel London, Lip Conditioning Balm by Kate Moss
Sally’s Box, Loverecipe AcaiBerry Mask & Loverecipe Aloe Mask
SLMissGlam, Blend Beauty Brush L34
All in all, I was pretty pleased with my bag. I actually looked at the bag preview and texted Bert going “I GOT A BLENDING BRUSH, HELL YES!”.
As one can never have too many blending brushes!
The only thing is that I probably should not have set my preferences to blush, because I feel that I am going to end up with a crazy amount of blushes, oops! But yeah, good stuff.
And I got really good value for money, as I got a brush and 2 full sized products (the lip balm and the pigment). I don’t really use peach blush a whole lot, so it’s utterly fine it’s a deluxe sample size, and the exact same goes for the pigment. So yeah, A+ bag, and I look forward to next month’s!
And now, for a little review of each product:
The blush: Model Co's Peach Bellini
This was actually the only product that didn’t leave me with a happy feeling. It wasn’t just that I already owned 4 blushes (2 of which I actively use and I ended giving one to Tiny so now I’m back to owning 4 in total), but it was because I tend to stay away from peach coloured blushes. It’s not something I generally gravitate to (says the person that literally this morning owned the Sweet Peach glow palette from Too Faced, even after anti-hauling it).
It IS a pretty blush though, I especially love how it sort of duo chrome shimmers to gold. Aside from that, it’s very creamy and pigmented, which is nice, I really like the texture.
I think I’ll actually use it more as an eye shadow than a blush, but in any case, I’ll be using it and that’s what counts.
It’s a good thing that Ipsy makes it a point to list ALL ingredients on their site too, because the company itself, Model Co, was less than forthcoming (they point blank ignored me when I contacted them) on theirs (contrary to all the other brands I got products of). I wouldn’t actually go and by from them, not with that attitude.
The pigment: Naked Cosmetics, mica pigment in Desert Sunset
Come-on, look how CUTE the Ipsy promo video is for that pigment, and it really shows off the versatility too!
I usually stay away from pigment because they’re products that more often than not contain either parabens or MIT (much like glitter).
So when I got a this one (a full size no less!), which is 100% safe for me to use, I was quite pleased. Especially as it comes in this beautiful nude-ish colour I didn’t already own. I don’t think I’d use it in quite as many ways as the video suggests, but I’m sure I’ll still get a lot of use out of it. Mostly as eye shadow, assisted by my trusty fix+, I guess :). But it’s good to know there are other options!
The brush: SLMissGlam x Ipsy L34 blending beauty
This was what I was initially most enthusiastic about. SLMissGlam is one of those brands that collaborates with YouTubers for exclusive brush sets a lot, and it’s pretty famous on YouTube.
I will admit that I had been curious about their brushes, but not to the point where I wanted to shell out the kind of money they cost (involving added shipping and customs makes it really expensive to buy from them).
Because I only had one proper fluffy blending brush (a Spectrum one and ‘lo and behold it is amazing, the other two are by essence – they’re fine, but not amazing or anything) and really wanted some more, I was extra happy with this one!
I still don't love it as much as my Spectrum one, BUT it's a decent quality brush nevertheless, and I will get plenty of use out it!
I also feel that the Ipsy team really looked at my preferences. Because there were two brushes this month, the other one being a contour brush. I believe I got this one because I did tick eye shadow as a preference, but did not tick contour. Well done Ipsy, well done!
The masks by Sally's Box
Well, ALAS, when my bag arrived, the masks weren’t there :(. So I can’t say anything about them. I left Ipsy Care a DM on twitter, so hopefully they can still send them along with another glam bag, or maybe send me another product instead. Fingers crossed!
It’s too bad, because I was really looking forward to trying them, but you know, these things happen. Hopefully it’ll be resolved, that’s all I can say.
The lip balm: Rimmel London x Kate Moss
I am not keen on Rimmel London, because it is not cruely free, but with Ipsy you don’t get to pick and choose, and I knew that when I went into this. Obviously, as I got it in my bag, I will use it up, but I wouldn’t go out and buy it, or any other Rimmel product for that matter.
It's an alright product, nothing amazing, but not crap either. I think the fact that it looks like a lipstick is overly gimmicky, but hey, it is how it is.
And these are all of January's products.
I was, I will admit, a teensy bit miffed that I didn't think about ticking bronzer as a preference, because in hindsight, I kinda want to try it, and The Balm is one of my ticked brands. And of course, there was a sample size of their Bahama Mama bronzer amongst the January products. So yeah, that's a massive oops on my part. BUT, I am SUPER happy that I got so many products I like regardless! And so many full sized ones too! And of course I’m a little miffed about the missing sheet masks too, but I can’t do more than contacting Ipsy (which I did) and hope for the best.
So how does Ipsy know what to give to you from that’s month products list?
Basically, the products they give you are based on your “beauty profile”, where you set your eye colour, skin tone and hair colour, as well as how comfortable you are with make-up and a whole lot of other preferences (which brands you like, which kinds of make-up and skin/hair care you like, etc).
You can tick as many or as few options as you like from the provided ones, I just decided to, initially, stick to products I actually use and like and brands I’d love to try (more of). I might add more options if I still stick with Ipsy in a few months time.
My plan is to review my subscription every 3 months. If I mostly get products I like, I will keep it, but if I keep on getting stuff I don’t use/want/can’t use consistently, I will just cancel it. Wait and see, I’m going to get the February and March bags in any case. So far so good though!
* The opening photo from this post is from the Ipsy page, because I thought it was really nice. Plus I can’t take a photo like that of myself ^^.
