|French Cafe's Garden Party - 7.7.2014
||[Jul. 15th, 2014|10:55 am]
On Monday Bert and I dragged ourselves out of bed at 6am once again, because I was going to the Garden Party in Nogent sur Marne (also pretty far into France) and Bert was dropping me off at Saltje’s house. Which meant another early 2 hour in total drive for him.
I arrived at Saltje’s a little early, fully dressed and made-up, to find her and Myriam still testing things and getting things together, BUT we all were in the car and left by 8, as planned.
Normally, it would have been a 3,5 hour drive and we would have been there nice and early.
Because in reality, we got stuck in a traffic jam caused by a massive 5 car collision near Werchter (whether it did or did not have anything to do with the festival I don’t know).
3 hours later we still hadn’t crossed the Belgian border into France because, wait for it, they had started setting up road works, and the cars in front of us created a “gawking jam” to gawk at, that’s right, NOTHING at all! Nothing but the set-up of a roadwork going to happen. And we got stuck in that thing for over a fucking hour! I mean…
And then in France we got stuck in a couple more, including another lengthy one to get into Nogent sur Marne.
Ok we took ONE small stop to get food, something to drink and go to the toilet, and I’m so glad we did because when we arrived at the event, all the savoury foods (bar Saltje’s beause she’s vegan and the vegan foods were kept aside) were gone.
Had I not eaten that sandwich and thus arrived full I would have had a serious problem, because with my heart condition I not only have to eat at a regular basis (more or less set times) but I also can’t just go and devour desserts on an empty stomach after having been up for hours on end.
Next time I totally need to warn the organisation to set a plate aside for me to avoid any issues that may arrise. Totally need to remember that!
Anyhow, I digress...
From the start! :)
To get to Le Manoir de l'Île aux Loups you had to take a little barge that would cross the river with you. There weren’t any when we arrived, but the people driving the boats noticed us soon enough so we didn’t have to wait long.
I spent the time waiting taking photos. I tried to photograph the amazing little dragonflies. They had blue bodies and wings that were almost butterfly wings in dark and bright blue. I’d never seen dragonflies like that before, and I’m sad I didn’t manage to take a non-blurry photo of them :(
When we got in, we found Lunie, who found someone else from the organisation and before we knew it Bloody handed Saltje her food and we all got our badges and were completely ready to go for the event.
The shops were set up in the inside hallway, as well as the table where you could buy extra raffle tickets.
It was really nice outside, not too warm, not chilly, ideal J-fashion weather really.
There was a wall full of little bags you could put Valentine’s in (nice messages), there was a game of Bingo, for which you had to gather the numbers on people’s badges to fill in your card. I gave participating a miss because I’m so horribly dyscalculectic. And at the speed they were going, that was a good thing too to be fair.
But I had fun taking photos and watching Saltje and Myriam slave over their sheets haha ^^.
(You can’t tell from the photo, but that’s Saltje holding up her Bingo sheet).
After Bingo it was time for desserts and Saltje once again got a vegan plate. Myriam and I queued to get our own regular desserts.
And had fun with cameras whilst we waited.

At the raffle table I saw that they had the Swimmer violin bag, which I loved ever since I saw it on Lunie’s blog. So I joked that if there were any burando gods, they’d let me win it. And then I went and won it, huzzah!
Raffle and best outfit prices distributed, It was time for the group shot.
Sorry to the people I flomped down in front of, I just automatically assumed it would go like in Belgium, where people form rows and those unafraid to get dirty sit down in front of them. I didn’t realise that in France people first form rows and that then the first row sits down. Mea culpa! I wasn’t out to steal a spot from someone else, I just didn’t know things went down differently in France than in Belgium.
But you know, I moved and found a spot next to Saltje (who had saved a spot for Myriam and I, sadly we had lost Myriam in the fray) and it all worked out ^^
So hopefully no one is holding it against me (especially as there was no bad intent on my part).
Because I didn’t get a group shot on my camera, I’m using this one by French Café.
We hung out with people some more, and stayed a bit later after the event to avoid more traffic mayhem possibility. Even though the event ended at 5, people were allowed to linger, which was great because it gave everyone that could stay late some more time to socialise and hang out.
And it didn’t rain ‘till we were back in the car, huzzah!
(I just couldn’t resist, thanks Bloody for going with my daft photo plan and Saltje for taking the photo ^^)
(In the car at a road stop)
I really, really did love the Garden Party, and I hope I can go again next year.
Although I already know Bert will INSIST I email people and press that I do need food due to my health issues, which I will, if only to avoid misery on the day itself.
So yeah, hopefully I will be able to go again next year.
And hopefully I’ll be able to go to the Street Fashion Europe event in Paris as well for a day (two in a row may be a bit much for my health), so fingers crossed for cheap Thalys tickets. Or if I can convince Bert to come: cheap Thalys tickets and affordable accommodations!
I took loads more photos, which you can see here.
