|22.2.2014: Artifakt steampunk meet in Antwerp, Belgium
||[Feb. 24th, 2014|12:26 pm]
The original plan was to meet up in Central station at 1.15 and go to Museum Plantin-Moretus from there on.
But Marijke and Babs, who both wanted to go, couldn't make it.
And then Sammy and Dorian were strapped for cash.
And Maarten and Xanthy hadn't arrived yet and wouldn't 'till 2pish in the end.
And Laurens had to go some place at 4.
So we went to Panos for lunch, waited for the others to arrive and decide to go get bubble tea and go thrifting instead.
On the way to 8tea5 (the bubble tea bar) we noticed the Crocs mascotte out. And seeing our illustrious leader Dorian is up for just about anything of the non dubious variety, I took his photo with it.
Laurens still has a sad that the Disney Store is closed.
We spend some time browsing the things at the first Think Twice vintage/thrift store, but other than Lora who bought a belt, we didn't do any shopping.
8tea5 was SO crowded, omg. I keep on saying they should just move into the old Disney Store building and have a bigger café place there!
Ideaslab used to be just outside of 8tea5, but it's closed now. I don't really know what it used to be to be honest, but it's mural and random chain in the floor are still there. The text reads "stop talking start building" and is topped by a lightbulb, a cog and a rocket. So the background seemed rather apt to have our outfit shots taken at. After all, the second someone else moves into the building (maybe 8tea5 can move there haha) it'll likely all disappear.
Raven and Dorian.
This is also my photo of that day :) (day 53)
Maarten was dressed as the 11th Doctor for some weird reason.
I'm starting to think he takes a dresscode (even a non existing one because with Artifakt people that are into steampunk for other aspects than fashion are more than welcome to show up in regular clothes) and then purposely wears something else.
I wonder what he'll do next time haha :)
Anyway, his little photo sequence was pretty funny :)
Xanthy was so kind to take my outfit shot ^^

Dorian approves of the JetFish.
A new definition of tie-fighters.
The fight was entirely staged for photographic purposes of course.
At the KBC tower we said goodbye to Laurens who had to go to an event at FNAC at 4, he was group hugged by as many people as possible without clogging up the sidewalk (we are considerate to others really!).
At the next thrift shop we found nothing so we went to the last one for the day: the other Think Twice :)
Union Jack bling was not bought.
Maarten went to get some Antwerpse Handjes, and Xanthy went to find Laurens, who rang and wanted to know where we were so he could join us again. So we waited for everyone to arrive back and I took some photos of Dorian loving this pretty cool looking random door.
More hugging happened when Maarten and Laurens were both there again.
In the end we did a couple of more stops, hung out on benches on the Meir, and thoroughly lamented the fact that the beautiful café on the 1st floor of Central Station is now closed!
It may not sound like a big deal to people so allow me to explain.
Central Station is an amalgam of Modernism, Art Nouveau and well, modern architecture. It's literred with a supermarket, 3 Panos shops (I know right X_x), a noodles place, a french fries place (and by place I mean booth in the wall with a couple of tables and chairs outside on the walkway), a newspaper stand, a Starbucks, you get my point.
That café was literally the only place (with exeption of filthy McDonalds and assorted burger chains) where you could get a drink at a decent price (excluding the Spar supermarket). AND it was a gorgeous old style café too!
But no, now they want people to spend an arm and a leg in one of the other "modern" places. And of course the nearby cafés are all horribly overpriced, leaving literally: McDonalds as nearest affordable place for a drink.
I mean, come-on.
(I shan't go into a rant of McMonsanto this time, but suffice to say that I do NOT approve).
If this is the price for progress, then Antwerp can stuff progress where the sun don't shine.
Anyhow, we're going to do another attempt at Plantin-Moretus next month :)
