Love, now and in the afterlife…
First of all: a huge thank you to my friends Dan and Jon, who let me send this to their house, thus averting a hefty customs charge and saving a ton on shipping!
Bert got this for me for our 15th anniversary. I originally wanted an octopus necklace I saw on etsy, but the seller went on holiday and didn’t seem to return, so he suggested (mainly because he didn’t like the octopus at all) I maybe get another planchette for my collection and ask Fiendies to not put in the magnifier so I can wear it as a necklace. It was a super valid suggestion, and so when their V-day series came out, I went for the gold mini planchette and indeed asked them if they could leave out the magnifier. Something which they were totally ok with (thank you Fiendies!).
Because I jumped on it, I also got a V-day pin and card along with my order, huzzah!
For those that didn’t know yet: yes I collect ouja board planchettes. Not the actual boards, just planchettes, because I love the aesthetic. I have the grand total of 3 now, so it’s an ongoing collection type thing.
Make sure they can see you glow from the moon!
Ok this thing is fucking amazeballs.
In all honesty, I got this as a review palette for BCM, to do a product review and use it in our make-up tutorial (I share it with Claire, who is BCM's beauty editor).
I first came across the brand (which is legit amazing and you should check it out) via Birdie’s Instagram (she’s sponsored by them) and figured I’d mail them about a collab. To which their co-owner Rachel Boese happily agreed to (thank you again Rachel!).
Now, I am not paid in any way to say anything nice about this palette, yes I got one for free to use in BCM, but that’s it.
What I think of it is entirely my own opinion, and I honest to god think that this is fucking amazing.
You get a ton of shades (12 in fact), and they either work as a super shimmery highlighter, or they become these amazing super pigmented foiled shadows AND you can even make them pop more over a black base.
Frankly I don’t know why people even look at the Kat von D Alchemist palette when THIS is the alternative option.
Also, these are the only highlighters I have ever tried that do NOT emphasise my skin's texture (and I have a lot of texture going on). Don't get me wrong, I don't mind it when they do, people don't have skin like flat paper, but when they don't, hey I do consider it a bonus :D.
I love this, I think it’s amazing, and I’ll be using it (together with Claire of course) ‘till it’s all gone. And then I’ll be sobbing because it’s limited edition and I’ll probably won’t be able to repurchase it. But as long as it lasts, I’m bloody well going to enjoy it to the fullest!
There is a full review of this product, as well an interview with Rachel Boese of Belladonna's Cupboard in the next issue of BCM, which will be out April 3rd.
(Swatch photo by Bert Van den Wyngaert, because I can barely take a photo of one of my arms swatched, two is never gonna work out ^^).
Make it work!
It’s white mascara, so I will totally make it work. People may or may not know that before I used all kinds of mascaras by NYX and M.A.C and occasionally other brands, I had an ongoing love affair with the white mascara by essence. Which was sadly discontinued, hence me going for other colours out of sheer misery.
And now M.A.C has come up with a whole slew of coloured mascaras. Literally the day they were released (February 23), even though I said I wouldn’t buy more make-up that month, I grabbed one. Because no fucking way I was going to risk that getting sold out. I didn’t actually use it ‘till March (because for starters, it was nearly March when I got it), which is why it’s in this month’s faves.
I love it so much, even though it's pretty crazy and makes me look like I'm wearing white falsies!
Sadly, alas, *dramatic fake sobbing* this is limited edition (DAMN YOU M.A.C).
So, even though it was pretty pricy to do, I grabbed another 2 from the website whilst I still could, so I am at least set for a while. And HOPEFULLY by the time I run out a brand I can use without causing irritation on my eyes will have white mascara stocked again.
Here's to hoping!
It's the cat’s meow
Well, it really IS called Meow. I really like the Winky Lux formula, I like how it’s basically toxin free (no parabens etc), and I really like this colour.
Whilst I am all about coloured lipsticks such as purples and metallics and all kinds of shades of red that aren’t so daily wear friendly, I just have to have at least a _few_ presentable shades that I can wear no matter the occasion.
In fact, I didn't own a single nude (the closest to nude I came were Film Noir from M.A.C which is brown with red undertones and Serial Dater by Sephora which is a raspberry pink), so I figured it was time to get one. After a lot of google searches and swatching my friend Isabelle's nude collection I settled on Meow.
It’s at least a sensible make-up purchase, but I do love this colour a lot, I've worn it a ton already and will continue to do so!
Strange name for something blood red…
Well it is, the lipstick is called lifeguard, but in reality it’s an oxblood red. So I’m not sure whether the name is appropriate…
That aside, it is a really neat colour of red lipstick, and considering this is the butter series, it is also very moisturising.
Of course, if I want it to be longer lasting, I’ll have to apply it over a lip liner, but luckily I already happen to have the right colour match.
I really like it, it’s not your classic every day red, but it is still appropriate for most circumstances, which I love!
This was actually from my February Ipsy bag (which arrived here first week of March), so that was a great find in there.
Brush that blush
It’s a blush brush! I got it in my February Ipsy bag. All rejoice! Because as everyone knows, you can’t have too many brushes!
There’s not much to be said really, it’s a very decent brush. It’s super soft, but not too soft for it to be efficient. And it’s the right size brush too, so I’m really happy with this!
I would never have gotten a Luxie Beauty brush on it's own, because with shipping and added customs cost it's just too expensive, so I'm really glad I got this in my February Ipsy bag.
And whilst we are on the subject of brushes
Yes, I nearly typed blushes instead of brushes, I will admit to it, but I digress.
I placed an order with Spectrum Collections this month, and whilst 4 out of 5 brushes where doubles/multiples for brushes I already own, I also got the A04 face brush, because when I was at M.A.C Louvain in February, one of the shop girls applied highlighter on me with a brush like that one. I figured I’d like a brush like that too, but not the one by M.A.C as that’s € 55 and 5 Spectrum brushes didn’t even cost me € 41,50, registered shipping included.
Anyway, the Spectrum version is just as soft as the M.A.C one, it’s just as easy to apply highlighter with, and the result is the same, so I’m totally not regretting getting the dupe, so to speak (it really is a dupe though).
It’s a great brush, and if I end up getting more highlighters, there’s a good chance I’ll get another one of these just to have a second one.
It’s a great brush and I would totally recommend it.
Down the rabbit hole…
It’s an appropriate tag line for this product, it is the Alice in Wonderland tin after all. When my friend Aurélie went to Japan, she was kind enough to pick this one up for me, because even though it’s still € 15, it was the cheapest option for me to try it. She LOVES Steamcream, and she’s been trying to get all her friends to use it too (and she probably realised that this was the only way to get me to try it).
Let me just be honest, I do really like it (I’m not that keen on the scent though, but I'm not a huge fan of the smell of lavender so that is totally a personal preference), and I enjoy using it whilst the pot lasts.
I really hope I’ll be able to clean the tin when it’s empty because it’s hella cute and I want to re-use it as a little storage tin.
BUT… I think there are cheaper options that do the same thing.
I feel that it’s pretty pricy for just 85ml.
And yes, it contains all decent ingredients and natural oils so it’s not odd that it’s a little more pricy, but I can make use of a 50% off coupon of Yves Rocher and get their So Elixir body lotion that does the exact same thing for my skin and contains 200ml for about the same price.
So yes, I do really like it, and I will enjoy using it ‘till it’s empty, but I’m not convinced you can’t get comparable products for a better price. So yeah, definitely a fave of this month, but I wouldn't repurchase it unless Yves Rocher stops doing the So Elixer body lotion.
That said, at least I know what to get when they do stop making that, so getting a tin of Steamcream was definitely a good move in the long run.
Cosmic cooties are worse than regular ones!
I’ve talked about volume one from this comic series in my December faves.
Obviously, it didn’t take me nearly as long to buy volume 2 as it took me to get 1. That said, I still LOVE this series, it’s still my favourite comic, and it consistently keeps getting better and better.
I don’t want to go too much into it because you know, spoilers, but if you like whimsical fun adventure style comics, and dinosaurs, seriously, check this out.
My friend Dan K was doing a giveaway of this film late 2016, and he was kind enough to give me a roll (which was really mighty generous of him and much appreciated, because I can’t afford the cost of the film + the shipping to my house for it), so I got to shoot it and YAY! I really do like it a lot. I keep hoping Grobet will stock it, so I can go and get a roll occasionally :).
Click here to see all photos I made with this film, and here for a flickr group with nothing but StreetPan photos.
There will be more photos I took up early April, because most of them were shots of PLASTICZOOMS and this time I refuse to release artist photos prior a BCM publication. At least not ones I might publish ;).
Twin Peaks meets Pretty Little Liars
I started watching this last month, on a recommendation of my friend Babs (thanks again Babs!), but I waited to include it in a faves post ‘till all episodes had been aired of the first season that were out already (and actually today the latest one aired in Belgium so that works out).
Let me first start by saying that I wholeheartedly agree with what someone said on youtube, this really is Twin Peaks meets Pretty Little Liars. Admittedly, I’ve not seen all of Pretty Little Liars, but I’ve seen more than enough to be able to support that claim, especially considering I’ve seen all of Twin Peaks, more than once.
I love this show, I’ve seen the first season several times now, and omg I really hope it gets renewed!
Basically, the reason that I love it is that it has some really good, well developed characters, as well as an ongoing metaplot. The pace and storytelling are also completely A+.
I haven’t enjoyed a series this much since Penny Dreadful or when Matt Smith played the Doctor, and those that know me well, know I LOVE Penny Dreadful and Eleven era Doctor Who.
I’m not going to beat around the bush, I started watching this when I was really ill last month, out of sheer misery for something to pass the time with, and actually liked the SFX work from the start.
And then I stuck around because I really the character Magnus Bane. I will happily admit I ship Malec (providing it doesn’t require more energy than actually watching the show). It’s not the most amazing show I’ve ever seen, but I really do love it. And several of the characters are _really_ entertaining, which is a definite bonus.
Will definitely watch the second half of season two when it comes out after the show’s winter break. Which is taking way too long, I am seriously annoyed having to wait 'till June 6th for the next episode. But hey, at least they got renewed for a 3rd season so that's great!
And yes, at some point I will buy and read The Bane Chronicles. Can’t be bothered with the entire book series, but I will read that one. More Magnus, yes please!
Added note: where possible I link to English language (UK) websites in the summary, even when I bought the product in a Belgian store, or via a Dutch language website. So if you don't live in the UK, simply google for your country's website alternative. Most stores I buy from have one.
Eventually these links may expire when a company discontinues a product, but at the time this post goes live, they *should* all be good.
