|Antwerp Convention #4: 27.4.2014
||[Apr. 30th, 2014|06:12 pm]
Ok so first things first. Originally, back in 2011, I saw a poster for the very first Antwerp Convention at FACTS. It was super cool and retro so I had to go. And go I did, together with Bert and Michel. Turned out that Bert went to school with Lode, who is the organiser, and we got in touch because I sent him an article promoting the second edition way back in an issue of BCM (which was still called Belgian Cupcakes Magazine back then, 'nuff said). We continued to review editions 2 and 3 as well, and this year I helped out with flyering and some of the press stuff.
And we got a stand for Artifakt, yay!
Knowing that Marijke and I would be pretty loaded up with stuff for the stand, Babs, awesome and kind as she is, offered to pick us up at Berchem station so we could get the last bit of the con in her car and wouldn't be stuck taking the tram two times. All hail to Babs, for she is fantastic! (she really, really IS!).
When I got at my local train station, I was informed that there may or may not be a delay on the train, so I texted Babs to come 5 minutes later. And found out I had a text from Lora who was on the same train as the one I was about to take. So I asked Babs if there was room in the car for one more and huzzah, there was!
And of course, the train wasn't late, it was even on time. So Marijke and I bought a sandwich for lunch at Panos in Berchem station, which was thankfully open even though it was a Sunday.
There was a MASSIVE queue when we arrived, for the parking, to get tickets, to get in, omg MASSIVE. We left Ruben and Lora in the queue and went to see if there was a press desk somewhere because Marijke, Babs and I had press passes. Babs noticed Joke nearly getting in, so we joined her. The kind guy at the door sent us in right into the office hall where we ran into Lode. Who wasn't even vaguely surprised I was there, just wondering HOW I managed to be where I wasn't supposed to (these things happen by accident I swear!) yet again (he barely knows me but yet he knows me so well haha). So Lode got us outside again, right at the press desk where they gave us our orange press bracelets, huzzah! We also ran into Agnes whilst waiting, who came to say hello :) And looked super cool in her Gothic Lolita Slytherin witch outfit. I need to remember to ask her where she got that awesome hat, I need a hat like that for Halloween, oh yes!
Anyway then we got in, and got given a program, and ran to the Artifakt stand which we found right away because Babs (contrary to the rest of us) had studied the map (huzzah for Babs!).
So we joined the rest of the crew, set up our part of the table and then it was time for the shenanigans to start!
Photo of the day: 27.4.2014 (day 117)
Babs attempted a fujiroid group shot, which didn't really work out but it's amusing regardless :)
Last minute outfit sorting.
Dorian, Sammy and Elise, who had been there before the start and did the initial set-up :)
Babs disappeared to get food, and a little later Marijke and I went to do a tour because I wanted to get photos in for a review before things got really crowed.
We started making good use of one of the brand new photo backdrops :)
And stop to admire all the cool horror movie bits on display.
Pose with the TARDIS as there was no queue.
We found Babs again in the other hall, where she was getting more food.
Awesome looking zombie interlude!
We bumped into Belinda
Who both looked AWESOME!
Checked out games and things for sale.
Bumped to Joke again :)
And returned back to the hall with the Artifakt stand,
Where I just had to photograph the droids. The tiny Superman just makes the photo extra fun :)
And said hello to Amaya and Daisy, running the Wonderland Designs stand full of awesome things :)
We bumped into Kara.
And Ruben, who was lugging around a giant Shadow statue in a giant box. Obviously we let him leave the box safe and secure at the Artifakt stand.
Lora had changed into her Human Being costume.
Sam, Elise and Dorian went for a walk around, and Dorian's gf Liesbeth appeared, flopping down at the stand waiting for him and playing her DS and talking to a friend mostly.
Another great thing about having a stand (with an easy exit) was that I could sneak out whenever I saw someone wearing something cool and ask for their photo. Bonus!
Silke, who looked so adorable!
This girl had such an awesome outfit! And she was mega nice too! And came back for the group shot, huzzah!
Hours later, with a little over an hour to kill for the group shot, Babs and I went to the other hall because I wanted to get two books signed by Jan Bosschaert. Well a book and a graphic novel. And we ran into Agnes and Jannes.
There were two gentlemen in line before me at Jan Bosschaert's table, but they were super sweet and let me get in front of them, which was mighty awesome and nice of them.
The artist himself was super awesome and kind too! I've been a fan of his work ever since I was a kid, and he's my favourite Belgian artist. He illustrated my favourite book from when I was a child "De Droom van Vlerk Vos" (translated: Vlerk Fox' Dream, well the translation of the title at least, I don't think it's been translated to other languages). I had also brought Bert's copy of Pest in 't Paleis, which is a political satire from years ago and Bert's favourite graphic novel. Mr Bosschaert seemed well amused with the selection I was bringing along and he illustrated that one too. Seriously, he's so awesome! It's always great to meet someone you look up to, but when they're genuienly sweet people it's even BETTER!

Autographs acquired, we went back to the Artifakt stand to hang out a bit for the group shot. And by that time my sister had managed to get in after having to wait 2 (!) hours to get in. I don't think she'll ever forget to buy a ticket in pre-sales ever again!
The trekkie was totally photo bombing. Lora and Agnes weren't in steampunk, but they're still members of Artifakt so they totally got to be in the group shot (we're that kind of crew). And the other three are the nice steampunk girl in her awesome outfit and the two guys are Glenn and another dude from SteamNation, a group from near Ghent.
After the group shot, Elise went to have her hair done at the Tolkien stand on the right side of us.
As you can see, Sammy approves as well :)
Marijke brought tea, because tea is serious steampunk business, obviously.
I went to go do another tour with my sister. We bought snacks at the Japan Centre stand, I bought a scoop of pistacchio ice cream because my throat was raw (I damaged my vocal chords last October during a bad bout of bronchitis, so now when I have to talk a lot my throat gets raw and an go all hoarse), we hung out with Kara and a friend of hers for a bit, witnessed the return of the drinks (they had run out and the organisation managed to get in a fresh supply 45 minutes before closing time, which was awesome of them), went back to the Archonia stand so Bé could get a My Little Pony mug and then went back to the Artifakt stand :)
Sammy took a picture of me and my sister :)
And one of Marijke and I with her kraken Strawberry (I knitted it, she named it ^^) for a long overdue entry in the Artifakt Chronicles (December 2013 overdue).
And then Bé took a group shot for the Artifakt Chronicles entry of that day :)
Turns out that I had needed to turn on the flash all along, oooooops ><
The extra silly one.
And the normal one. Normal for our doing at least :)
Although I think we did pretty darn well during the group shots of Antwerp Con that Babs took too! :)
After that I cleaned up our stuff, I attackhugged Lode at the info desk, said goodbye to friends, and took a tram to Central station where Lora and I said goodbye to the rest and took the train towards her home town, which also stops at my home town :)
Once home I realised I didn't have any outfit shots (the horror, the horror), and Bert took one. With my shrug, minus my pauldron. And minus my goggles. So basically like I left the house. Before I dumped the shrug (because it was warm) and put on goggles and pauldron at the con. Oh well.
